SIM lock:

A SIMLOCK, NETWORK-LOCK, Carrier-Lock, IMEI LOCK or (master) subsidy lock is actually a technical limit built into CDMA and GSM cellular phones by manufacturers to be used by service providers to limit the use of these phones to particular locations and/or networks. This is unlike a phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not enforce any SIM limitations. In the event the devices were not locked, owners may well sign an agreement with one provider, obtain the low priced phone, then quit paying the monthly payment (thus breaking the contract) and start using the phone on a different network or maybe sell the device for a profit. SIM locking curbs this by prohibiting a change of service (using a new SIM).

Unlocking Technology:

A mobile can be unlocked by entering a code provided by the service operator. Alternative mechanisms consist of software working on the device or a pc attached to the handset, hardware devices that link to the device or over-the-air by the carrier. Most of the time the unlock operation is permanent. The code needed to do away with all locks from a cell phone is called the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. Generally if the phone is carrier locked it will generally show one of the following messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

The primary reason to unlock a handset is to be able to use it with another type of SIM card. Users might like to carry on using their cellphone but with a different service provider or while traveling overseas they might want to connect to a foreign network using a pre pay subscription.

Unlocking Services:

Plenty of companies provide a permanent smartphone unlocking service . This service needs all those that want to unlock a mobile to provide their IMEI number to a unlocking company and in most cases they will also request the country and service provider the device is locked to, frequently sent by email or entered on their web site. The supplier will then supply (once you have paid) an unlock code for the mobile phone handset.
