Jason Momoa Signs On To Star In Warner Bros Minecraft Movie

Warner Bros. is getting back into business with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Jason Momoa, bringing him in for their long-gestating Minecraft movie.



According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor aged 42 has signed on for an undisclosed role in the videogame adaptation.



Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), is also joining the team to direct the project, which signifies that it finally has some momentum after nearly a decade of development.

The Minecraft video game was launched in 2011 by Markus Persson, a Swedish game designer and Mojang Studios.



The game's unconventional goal is not to be followed, but users can create worlds from blocks. They must survive in these worlds.

The game was an instant success, with over 100,000,000 users signing up in just a few years. This led Microsoft to purchase Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014.



First game: The Minecraft videogame debuted in 2011, created and developed at Mojang Studios by Markus Persson, a Swedish designer of games.



There have been several spin-offs like Minecraft: Story Mode in 2014 with Telltale Studios, Minecraft Earth in 2019, and Minecraft Dungeons for 2020.



Shortly after its release, a number of filmmakers and producers expressed interest but Mojang's CEO Carl Manneh said in an interview they would only engage, 'if the right idea comes along.'



Creator Persson disclosed that Mojang was interested in a Minecraft film. Shawn Levy (Free Guy), the first to be appointed to direct, was based on a Jason Fuchs script (Wonder Woman).

Rob McElhenney (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) was the co-creator and star of the show. Steve Carell was also a star.



Production did begin in 2016 but was halted by Greg Silverman (then-Warner Bros. minecraft CEO) who was replaced later by Toby Emmerich.



According to reports Emmerich was pursuing a 'different vision for the movie', McElhenney resigned in 2018.



Vision: Reports claimed Emmerich had a "different vision" for the film. McElhenney quit the project in 2018.



Aaron and Adam Nee from The Lost City joined McElhenney, Fuchs and the studio in 2018 to replace them. However, Peter Sollett replaced them with The Lost City in 2019. The studio then set a March 4, 2020 release date.



This incarnation was never realized as the project was canceled due to COVID-19. However, it appears that the studio is now ready to move forward with Minecraft. However, no details were provided about the story or Momoa.



Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce. minecraft Jill Messick will also be receiving a posthumous production credit for her work in the film's making before her death in 2018.
