Microsoft is expanding its world of Minecraft into a brand-new action-adventure gamecalled Minecraft Legends. The game will launch in 2023 and asks players to explore Minecraft as it is attacked by a dark force.

Mojang studios of Microsoft which is the company behind Minecraft the game, described the new game as a familiar, but in many ways, a brand new experience that is more focused on strategy and combat. The original Minecraft game was released in the year 2011. It allows players to build and explore while fighting off zombie-like creatures.

Microsoft has announced that you are the central figure in any battle you take on, fighting alongside allies and guiding them," in an announcement teaser. Microsoft announced that it had a partnership with Blackbird Interactive, which also created the space strategy game Homeworld 3.

Just because Minecraft Legends comes from a popular game doesn't guarantee its success however. Minecraft itself may be one of the most played video games ever made, up there with Tetris, Super Mario Bros. and Grand Theft Auto. However, its attempts to expand beyond that hit formula have been intermittent.

Minecraft Dungeons, an action-adventure game based on Minecraft's style, received mixed reviews when it was released two years ago, as per an analysis by Metacritic. GameSpot, another CNET corporate partner also gave Minecraft Dungeons a "good" rating. GameSpot noted that Minecraft Dungeons was focused on fighting monsters, rather than offering a new twist to its basic formula of building worlds. Reviews "Rather than shift our expectations of what games could be, it's relying on its own popularity," GameSpot's Steve Watts wrote.

Microsoft announced Minecraft Legends at its annual summer video game showcase, which will be held online this year. The game will be available next year on Xbox, PC and cloud gaming.
