The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel was opened in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital city.

It connects Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance within Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem's rich past was the main reason that it was the most visited tourist spot in the past. A total of NIS 25 million was invested in the project, budgeted by Elkin's ministry, the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality, the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated the fact that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is a central tool to realize the vision to redefine the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem." "The new tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path. It will link to the numerous bicycle paths that are already within the city. The paths will be paved within the diverse neighborhoods. The aim is to encourage cycling among residents of the city.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel which includes the fifth waterline that runs to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.
