University of East Anglia recreated Minecraft Minecraft during lockdown

22 May 2020

Students have recreated their campus virtually as a response to the lack of university life following the Covid-19 lockdown.

Sophie Johnston, a University of East Anglia (UEA) fresher was 19 when she looked through the planning software to create the grounds with the video game Minecraft.

She was assisted by three housemates: Rebecca Bystry (20), Tom Greensted (19) and Matthew Wright (19).

More than 200 students have visited the "campus" and the campus is still being constructed.

Ms. Johnston said: "We all agree that what we are missing most is the social aspect of university, meeting and getting to meet so many people from all sorts of backgrounds.

"The server has allowed us to stay in contact with one another, but also met people we would never have encountered in real life. This has been helpful for us all psychologically during lockdown."

Students have created places like the Ziggurat accommodation and main square, LCR music venue or UEA(su), and the library at Norwich's university.

The four students who act as server administrators have different roles. Ms Johnston and Mrs Bystry are the ones who build the servers. BLASTERMUSIC Mr Wright responds to player queries via voice calls and text chats. Mr Greensted who has studied programming, is responsible for troubleshooting.

The Minecraft creative mode allowed for unlimited access to Minecraft materials This meant that the campus was built by students.

They are still working on the interiors of a few buildings, with the assistance of other players.

Ms. Johnston said: "Since we're first years and haven't visited any of the buildings, we've had make use of the assistance of staff, students and alumni who have provided photos to help us- there's been a lot of recalling!"
