SIM lock:

A SIM-Lock, network-lock, CARRIER-LOCK, imei-lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock is a technical limitation built into CDMA and GSM mobile devices by manufacturers for use by carriers to limit the use of these phones to specific locations and/or networks. This is contrary to a phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) which doesn't enforce any SIM constraints.Generally if the phones weren't locked, consumers may well sign an agreement with one particular supplier, obtain the discounted phone, then stop paying the monthly bill (thus breaking the contract) and start using the cellphone on another mobile phone network or even sell the phone for a profit. SIM locking curbs this by prohibiting a change of service (using a new SIM).

Unlocking Technology:

A phone can be unlocked by entering a code supplied by the service operator. Alternative mechanisms include software operating on the handset or a pc connected to the phone, hardware devices that link to the handset or over-the-air by the provider. More often than not the unlock process is permanent. The code required to do away with all locks from a smartphone is called the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. Generally if the phone is carrier locked it will usually show one of the following messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

Most of the time a SIM-locked device is marketed at a considerably cheaper cost than an unlocked one because the company expects income via its service. SIM locks are currently employed on less expensive (pay-as-you-go) handsets, though bargains on more pricey handsets require a subscription that provides guaranteed income. Unlocked mobiles have a better market value.

Unlocking Services:

A few companies provide a permanent mobile phone unlocking service . This service needs individuals that would like to unlock a phone to supply their IMEI number to a service supplier and sometimes they will also need the country and cellular network the mobile phone is locked to, either sent by email or submitted on their web site. The company will then provide (at a cost to you) an unlock code for the device.
